7 Easy Ways to Incorporate Science into Kids' Everyday Lives!

Medinah Eatman

Science is one of the most important things a child can learn about because it's found in our everyday lives. Many people think science is too complicated or too expensive when in reality it is everywhere!

We can experience science by baking in the kitchen, we can explore science by looking at the stars, and we can tinker with it by building with blocks! Everything we do has a scientific concept attached to it, so why not use it as a way to engage our children in learning about the world around them?

Here are 7 EASY ways to incorporate science every day for your kids!

1. Science Museums

Science museums have everything that you need to engage your child in science, you just have to show up! It’s hands-on and life size activities are sure to get your child excited about science and you don’t have to do much prep. Find a science center, museum or pop up event near you, pack some snacks and a stroller and enjoy your day! Your child will come home with stories to tell, and a lot of questions for further exploration.

2. Get a Science Subscription Box

All that goes into planning lessons not for you? Don’t have the time to add yet another thing to your plate, but still want your child to get some hands-on science in? Science Subscription Boxes take the hassle out of the experiments for you. Science Subscription boxes help parents and elementary school teachers take the prep out of the science activities by planning the lessons, providing the worksheets, creating tutorial videos and shipping materials straight to your door!

3. Repurpose Toys to Make Something New

There are so many toys that end up in the proverbial toy box graveyard. Your child may be over them as is, so why not experiment with using them in a new and improved way. Create ramps from wooden slats or toilet paper rolls, grab some dominos, old cars or marbles and voila! you are on your way to create a Rube Goldberg machine!

4. Observe Organisms

Observing animals, bugs, and insects is an easy way to incorporate life science! If you

have a pet, have your child make daily observations and care for the pet. Go visit the zoo, petting farm or aquarium, if that’s your thing. If you live in an area with greenery, get out in the dirt and dig up some bugs and worms and watch them go!

5. Go on a Nature Walk

There is so much to learn from nature, and the best part about it is that it’s so easy to access. Go on a hike, bring some binoculars, a magnifying glass and tweezers and let them explore the world around them. Just make sure you’re prepared for dirt digging!

6. Hang Out in the Kitchen

Kitchen science is my jam! As a mom of 2 boys, I spend a lot of time in the kitchen, so whenever I can engage them where I am, it’s so much easier. Baking and cooking is a science in itself. Beyond this, using what is in your kitchen pantry is chemistry at its finest!

Some tips: make ice cream in a bag or make a DIY volcano using baking soda and vinegar!

7. Read a science themed book

There are so many great books out there that will engage your little learner in science and have them ask for more. If you grab a good book, you can pair the book with a comparable science experiment. Find a book about bubbles, make bubbles. Grab a book about airplanes, build an airplane! The science possibilities are endless and the love of reading is the cherry on top!
